Achannaras September 2003 |
I was lucky enough to visit this quarry twice in September of this yer. Scottish Natural Heritage provided a permit by post prior to the visit and also sent some helpful information. I stayed at Glutt lodge with some friends and this is around 45 minutes drive from the quarry. parking is easy and the quarry is well signposted. I agree with the site information listed on this site. a great deal of patience is required. I found one specimen that requires preparation. I will post images when I have done this. One point I would like to make is that a recce is best carried out before splitting rocks. I split hundreds of slabs before getting a clue as to what exactly were the fossil bearing slabs. However, once I had found a specimen it soon became apparent that most of the slabs with the blue-grey colouration and orange-yellow seams have already been split!! I was lucky enough to find a disguarded counterpart which gave me the information I needed to search further. I subsequently found one complete fish. There were some large slabs already split that contained some small fragments.
In conclusion I would state that this is a lovely spot to hunt for fossils although you should take plenty of drinking water, consolidant and be prepared to work hard for every find. I kept my search restricted to the spoil heaps around the small lake. I expect to return next year and will then concentrate on the large spoil heaps to the rear of the site. finally, I would recommend September as a great month for a visit as I collected some wonderfully tasty horse mushrooms which went a good way to satisfying the hunger you generate by all the hard work! |
